Scope of the Problem:
The AZRP seeks to support transformative research on Alzheimer's Disease/AD-Related Dementias with outcomes relevant to the populations they aim to benefit, including Service Members, Veterans, their Families and the general public.
There is an urgent need to prevent and reduce the risk of developing AD/ADRD, particularly following traumatic brain injury and similar deleterious exposures. Military personnel are at increased risk of developing dementia following their service. The AZRP encourages innovations to accelerate research and interventions in the risk reduction and prevention space.
Those who are at risk of developing AD/ADRD, particularly post-TBI, need early, accurate diagnosis to optimize treatment availability and impact. The AZRP prioritizes research efforts aimed at improving diagnosis and prognosis now including methods, technologies, patient access to diagnosis, and accuracy of diagnosis and prognosis in clinical care.
The AZRP supports research that improves the lives of people living with dementia now. AZRP-supported research should, with a sense of urgency, lead to meaningful outcomes to support caregivers and persons with AD and ADRD. Additionally, the AZRP prioritizes a focus on partnership between researchers and those most impacted by these conditions. The program requires that clinical research projects include community collaboration.
Like millions of Americans and others around the globe, Service Members and Veterans often shoulder the additional responsibility of caring for loved ones with dementia. In situations such as deployment and reassignment, unique pressures and challenges exist for Service Members who serve as care and support partners, which can significantly impact both readiness and personal health. The AZRP prioritizes research to effectively support quality of life for both the individual living with the diagnosis and their families/care communities.
