PUBLIC ABSTRACT

Seizures occur in nearly 90% of tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) patients. Using a simple vertebrate, zebrafish, we will directly address the question of whether seizures are the result of reduced TSC function. Few experimentally useful animal models of TSC are currently available. A zebrafish TSC model can be used to study basic mechanisms underlying seizure genesis (this proposal) or as a system for high-throughput screening of agents that may modify the disease (potential future proposal). This research is important for the vast majority of TSC patients suffering with medically intractable seizure disorders.
