PUBLIC ABSTRACT

In this proposal we intend to explore the value of hyperspectral imaging (HSI) in distinguishing between normal and cancerous breast tissue in situ in the rat model. This is a preliminary study designed to validate the possibility of using HSI as a tool to provide useful information to the surgeon in the operating room to determine the adequacy of margins of resection at the time of breast cancer surgery. Much work has been conducted attempting to detect breast cancer in vivo using a variety of noninvasive methods, predominantly directed toward early detection of breast cancer. One avenue that has been relatively unexplored, however, is the use of optical methods in the operating room during surgery for breast cancer. The hyperspectral imaging technique will be utilized on a rat model of breast cancer to characterize the differences between cancerous and noncancerous tissue in a surgical setting. This study will utilize a commonly used rat breast cancer model.
