Department of Defense Peer Reviewed Orthopaedic Research Program
Funding Opportunities for Fiscal Year 2012
The Fiscal Year 2012 (FY12) Defense Appropriations Act provides $30 million (M) to the Department of Defense Peer Reviewed Orthopaedic Research Program (PRORP). The PRORP seeks to fund innovative, high-impact, clinically relevant research to advance optimal treatment and rehabilitation from musculoskeletal injuries sustained during combat or combat-related activities. This program is administered by the US Army Medical Research and Materiel Command through the Office of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP).
The FY12 PRORP Focus Areas are:
- Improvement of moisture management and residual limb skin care at the prosthetic socket interface.
- Improvement of the rate of nerve regeneration.
- Strategies to inhibit neuromas at surgical/amputation sites.
- The treatment of segmental bone injury in weight-bearing locations, including utilization of the Masquelet technique for bioactive membrane formation and identification of the best bone graft options. Clinical and mature translational studies only; development of novel bone void filler products are not of interest.
- The comparative effectiveness of local strategies to minimize surgical site infection, including local application of antibiotics, debridement techniques, and subatmospheric wound dressings.
- Treatment and management of heterotopic ossification. Mature translational studies only; the development and/or validation of new animal models of heterotopic ossification are not of interest.
- Mitigation of the negative effects of immobility for polytrauma patients, excluding spinal cord injury.
- Short-term and long-term outcomes in limb salvage populations.
- Prevention or treatment of post-traumatic joint stiffness and contracture in the ankle, knee, and/or elbow.
