Discovery Award Funding Opportunity for Fiscal Year 2011

The Fiscal Year 2011 (FY11) Defense Appropriation Act provides for $16 million (M) to the Department of Defense (DOD) Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program (PRCRP) to research cancers not addressed in breast, prostate, lung (excluding mesothelioma), and ovarian cancer research programs currently executed by the DOD U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC). The funds provided are directed to be used to conduct research for the following topic areas:

  • Blood Cancers
  • Colorectal Cancer
  • Genetic Cancer Research
  • Kidney Cancer
  • Listeria Vaccine for Cancer
  • Melanoma and Other Skin Cancers
  • Mesothelioma
  • Pancreatic Cancer
  • Pediatric Cancers
  • Radiation Protection Utilizing Nanotechnology

The program is administrated by the USAMRMC through the Office of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP).

FY11 PRCRP Program Announcement and General Application Instructions for the Discovery Award mechanism are anticipated to be posted on the Grants.gov website by late August or early September 2011.

Discovery

Investigators at all academic levels (or equivalent). Post-doctoral candidates and early career independent investigators are encouraged to apply.

  • Supports the exploration of highly innovative, untested, high risk/potentially high reward concepts, theories, paradigms and/or methods to address one or more of the FY11 PRCRP Topic Areas
  • Applications must not address breast, prostate, lung (excluding mesothelioma), or ovarian cancer research
  • Preliminary data is strongly discouraged
  • Clinical trials will not be supported
  • Maximum funding for the entire period of performance is $200,000 for direct costs (plus indirect costs)
  • Maximum period of performance is 2 years

Information in this pre-announcement is being provided to allow investigators time to plan and develop proposals. All proposals must conform to the final Program Announcement and General Application Instructions (including deadlines) that will be available for electronic downloading from the Grants.gov website in late August or early September 2011. The application package containing the required forms for each award mechanism will also be found on Grants.gov.

A pre-application is required and must be submitted through the CDMRP eReceipt website (https://cdmrp.org) prior to proposal submission. Applications must be submitted through the federal government's single-entry portal, Grants.gov.
