Department of Defense Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program
Funding Opportunities for Fiscal Year 2011

The Department of Defense (DOD) Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program's (PRCRP) vision is to improve quality of life by decreasing the impact of cancer on service members, their families, and the American public. This program is administered by the US Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC) through the Office of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP).

Fiscal Year 2011 (FY11) Defense Appropriation Act provides for $16 million to the DOD PRCRP to research cancers not addressed in breast, prostate, lung (excluding mesothelioma), and ovarian cancer research programs currently executed and managed by the Office of the CDMRP. The funds provided are directed to be used to conduct research for the following topic areas:

  • Blood Cancers
  • Colorectal Cancer
  • Genetic Cancer Research
  • Kidney Cancer
  • Listeria Vaccine for Cancer
  • Melanoma and Other Skin Cancers
  • Mesothelioma
  • Pancreatic Cancer
  • Pediatric Cancers
  • Radiation Protection Utilizing Nanotechnology

Information in this pre-announcement is being provided to allow investigators time to plan and develop applications. The FY11 PRCRP program announcement and general application instructions for the following award mechanism are anticipated to be posted on the Grants.gov website by the end of June 2011.

Visionary Postdoctoral Fellowship Award
  • Principal Investigator: M.D./Ph.D. graduate with a total of less than 4 years of postdoctoral research experience
  • Mentor(s): Independent non-tenured investigator at the level of Assistant/Associate Professor with faculty appointment less than 7 years
  • Research must be in one or more of the FY11 PRCRP Topic Areas
  • Supports postdoctoral fellows training in the laboratory of early career investigators (mentor) with expertise in one or more of the FY11 PRCRP Topic Areas
  • Supports postdoctoral training to include a budget option for research supplies
  • Applications must not address breast, prostate, lung (excluding mesothelioma), and ovarian cancer research
  • Preliminary data not required
  • Clinical trials will not be supported
  • Maximum funding for the entire period of performance is $240,000 for direct costs (plus indirect costs)
  • Maximum period of performance is 3 years

The application package containing the required forms for this award mechanism will also be found on Grants.gov.
