Department of Defense Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program
Funding Opportunities for Fiscal Year 2010

The Fiscal Year 2010 (FY10) Defense Appropriation Act provides for $15 million (M) to the Department of Defense (DOD) Peer Reviewed Research Program (PRCRP) to research cancers not addressed in breast, prostate, lung, and ovarian cancer research programs currently executed by the DOD U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC). The funds provided are directed to be used to conduct research for the following topic areas:

  • Melanoma and other skin cancers
  • Pediatric brain tumors within the field of childhood cancer
  • Genetic cancer research and genomic medicine
  • Blood cancers
  • Colorectal cancer
  • Kidney cancer
  • Listeria vaccine for cancer
  • Radiation protection utilizing nanotechnology

The program is administrated by the USAMRMC through the Office of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP).

FY10 PRCRP Program Announcements and Application Instructions for the following award mechanisms are anticipated to be posted on the Grants.gov website by May and June 2010.

Concept Award

Investigators at all academic levels (or equivalent)

  • Supports the exploration of a highly innovative new concept or untested theory addressing FY10 PRCRP Topic Areas
  • Proposals must not address breast, prostate, lung, or ovarian cancer research
  • Preliminary data are not allowed
  • Clinical trials will not be supported

  • Maximum funding for the entire period of performance is $75,000 for direct costs (plus indirect costs)
  • Maximum period of performance is 1 year

Idea Award

Investigators at all academic levels (or equivalent)

  • Supports the exploration of ideas that are still in the early stages of development yet have the potential to yield high-impact results and open new avenues of investigation in the relevant Topic Areas
  • Proposals must not address breast, prostate, lung, or ovarian cancer research
  • Preliminary data are not required
  • Clinical trials will not be supported
  • Collaborative option: Up to three investigators may collaborate on a single application, each of whom will be recognized as a Principal Investigator (PI) and receive a separate award

  • Maximum funding for the entire period of performance is $375,000 for direct costs (plus indirect costs)
  • For multiple PIs, the combined total funding for all PIs for the entire period of performance may not exceed $750,000 in direct costs
  • Maximum period of performance is 3 years

Translational New Investigator Award

PI: Clinician or researcher at the level of Instructor, Assistant Professor, or equivalent.

Mentor: Established clinician or researcher at the level of Associate Professor or above (or equivalent).

  • Supports the development of translational research collaborations between an independent new investigator and a mentor to address at least one of the FY10 PRCRP Topic Areas in a manner relevant to military beneficiaries
  • Either the new investigator or the mentor must be a clinician
  • Proposals must not address breast, prostate, lung, or ovarian cancer research
  • Preliminary data are not required
  • Clinical trials will not be supported

  • Maximum funding for the entire period of performance is $300,000 for direct costs (plus indirect costs)
  • Maximum period of performance is 3 years

Information in this pre-announcement is being provided to allow investigators time to plan and develop proposals. All proposals must conform to the final Program Announcements and Application Instructions (including deadlines) that will be available for electronic downloading from the Grants.gov website in May and June 2010. The application package containing the required forms for each award mechanism will also be found on Grants.gov.

A pre-application is required and must be submitted through the CDMRP eReceipt website (https://cdmrp.org) prior to proposal submission. Proposals must be submitted through the federal government's single-entry portal, Grants.gov.
