Department of Defense Peer Reviewed Orthopaedic Research Program
Funding for Fiscal Year 2009 (FY09)

Fiscal Year 2009 (FY09) congressional appropriations (Public Law 110-329 and 111-32), provide $61 million (M) and $51M, respectively, for a total appropriation of $112M to the Department of Defense Peer Reviewed Orthopaedic Research Program (PRORP) to support innovative, high-impact, clinically relevant research to advance treatment and rapid rehabilitation from musculoskeletal injuries sustained during military combat or combat-related activities. This program is administered by the US Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC) through the Office of Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP).

The FY09 PRORP is pleased to announce the release of the Career Development Award. The Program Announcement/Funding Opportunity, including the intent of the award mechanism, eligibility, and submission deadlines and Application Instructions and General Information have been posted on the Grants.gov and CDMRP websites (https://grants.gov and https://cdmrp.army.mil/funding/prorp.htm, respectively).

The FY09 PRORP will offer one additional award mechanism, the Clinical Consortium Award, which is expected to be released in late September.

Award Mechanism Eligibility Key Mechanism Elements Funding
Career Development Award Military investigators with less than a total of 8 years of postdoctoral clinical or research experience (excluding clinical residency or fellowship training)
  • Letter of intent is required
  • Provides support to military investigators at an early career stage located at a DOD research or clinical site
  • Requires mentorship by an established, independent orthopaedic researcher
  • Applications must address at least one of the PRORP-identified priority research areas in military combat-relevant orthopaedic research
  • Preliminary data are not required
  • Funds to directly support clinical trials are excluded
  • Maximum funding of $225K for direct costs (plus indirect costs)
  • Period of performance not to exceed 3 years
  • Anticipate 5 awards
Clinical Consortium Award Associate Professor or above (or equivalent)
  • Letter of intent is required
  • Provides support to develop the collaborations, resources, and infrastructure necessary for a consortium to rapidly execute clinical studies focused on improving definitive care and rehabilitation from military combat-related orthopaedic injuries
  • Requires collaboration with military treatment facilities
  • One award will be made to a Coordinating Center with superior expertise in clinical orthopaedic research studies, and with the experience to lead a major consortium
  • Maximum funding of $30M for direct costs (plus indirect costs)
  • Period of performance not to exceed 5 years
  • Anticipate 1 award

Information in this press release regarding the Clinical Consortium Award is being provided to allow investigators time to plan and develop applications. The government reserves the right to make changes to the award mechanisms offered and the mechanism elements if necessary. All applications must conform to the final Program Announcement and Application Instructions & General Information that will be available on Grants.gov at a later date.

A pre-application (letter of intent or preproposal) is required for all award mechanisms and must be submitted through the CDMRP eReceipt website (https://cdmrp.org) prior to application submission.
