The Office of Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs extends its congratulations to Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn on her receipt of the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, in conjunction with Drs. Carol W. Greider and Jack W. Szostak, for their discovery of "How Chromosomes are Protected by Telomeres and the Enzyme Telomerase".

CDMRP is pleased to note that Dr. Blackburn previously received an Idea Award for her research entitled Novel Strategies Targeting Telomere Maintenance for the Treatment and Prevention of Breast Cancer. This award, funded through CDMRP's 1996 Breast Cancer Research Program, supported Dr. Blackburn in applying her groundbreaking work on telomeres and telomerase to new discoveries in breast cancer.
