DOD CDMRP Research Funding for 2009

The Fiscal Year 2009 (FY09) Defense Appropriation Act (Public Law 110-329) provides research funding for the following programs managed by the Department of Defense office of Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP):

  • Breast Cancer Research Program $150 Million
  • Prostate Cancer Research Program $80 Million
  • Ovarian Cancer Research Program $20 Million
  • Neurofibromatosis Research Program $10 Million
  • Tuberous Sclerosis Complex Research Program $6 Million
  • Autism Research Program $8 Million
  • Gulf War Illness Research Program $8 Million
  • Peer Reviewed Medical Research Program $50 Million * (see Below)

Additional programs now being managed by the CDMRP are as follows:

  • Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Research Program $5 Million
  • Bone Marrow Failure Research Program $5 Million
  • Multiple Sclerosis Research Program $5 Million
  • Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program $16 Million ** (see Below)
  • Peer Reviewed Lung Cancer Research Program $20 Million
  • Peer Reviewed Orthopedic Research Program $61 Million (added 9 January 2009)
  • Peer Reviewed Spinal Cord Research Program $35 Million (added 9 January 2009)

* Research topics under the FY09 Peer Reviewed Medical Research Programs are restricted to: Alcoholism, Autoimmune Diseases, Blood Cancer, Childhood Asthma, Drug Abuse, Epilepsy, Kidney Cancer, Listeria Vaccine for infectious disease and cancer, Lupus, Mesothelioma, Molecular Signatures in Tumors, Neuroblastoma, Osteoporosis and related bone disease, Paget's Disease, Pediatric Cancer, Polycystic Kidney Disease, Social Work Research, Tinnitus, West Nile Virus Vaccine.

** Research funding under the FY09 Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program is restricted as follows: $4 Million for research of melanoma and other skin cancers as related to deployments of service members to areas of high exposure; $2 Million for research of pediatric brain tumors within the field of childhood cancer research; $8 Million for genetic cancer research and its relation to exposure to the various environments that are unique to a military lifestyle; and $2 Million for non-invasive cancer ablation research into non-invasive cancer treatment including selective targeting with nano-particles.

Program Announcements are anticipated to be released during winter/spring of 2009 with detailed descriptions of funding mechanisms, evaluation criteria, submission requirements, and deadlines. These specific details, including deadlines, are not available until the Program Announcements are released. Each Program Announcement will be available electronically for downloading from the Grants.gov website (https://www.grants.gov) and the CDMRP website (https://cdmrp.army.mil) upon its release.

Pre-Applications (such as a Letter of Intent or Pre-Proposal) are required, and must be submitted through the CDMRP eReceipt website https://cdmrp.org. Announcements and required forms can also be found on this website. Full proposals must be submitted through the Federal Government's single entry portal Grants.gov (https://www.grants.gov) in compliance with Public Law 106-107. Program Deadlines for each program and each funding mechanism will be made available in Program Announcement releases.
