Department of Defense Autism Research Program (ARP)
Funding Opportunities for Fiscal Year 2008 (FY08)

The FY08 Defense Appropriations Act provides $6.4 million for the Department of Defense Autism Research Program to improve the lives of individuals living with autism spectrum disorder now. With this goal in mind, the ARP challenges the scientific community to design innovative research that will foster new directions for, address neglected issues in, and bring new investigators to the field of autism research. This program is administered by the US Army Medical Research and Materiel Command through the Office of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP). FY08 ARP Program Announcements for proposals in the following mechanisms are anticipated to be posted on Grants.gov by 30 April 2008.

  • Supports the exploration of an initial idea or novel observation that could give rise to a testable hypothesis
  • Emphasis on innovation and impact on the field of autism spectrum disorder research
  • Name and institution of PI are not provided to reviewers
  • Preliminary data are not required
  • Clinical trials are not appropriate for this award mechanism

  • A maximum of $75,000 for direct costs for up to a 1-year performance period, plus indirect costs as appropriate

Synergistic Idea Award

Independent, faculty-level investigators (or equivalent)

  • Must have at least two PIs collaborating on a single proposal
  • Supports innovative research that advances the understanding of autism spectrum disorder and leads to improved treatment outcomes
  • Presentation of preliminary data is required. However, it does not necessarily have to come from the ASD research field.
  • Clinical trials or clinical research are appropriate for this award

  • A maximum of $250,000 in direct costs for up to a 3-year performance period plus indirect costs as appropriate

Information in this pre-announcement is being provided to allow investigators time to plan and develop proposals. All proposals submitted must conform to the final program announcements that will be posted on Grants.gov at a later date. The number of awards anticipated is based on available funds, average cost of proposals, and the quality of proposals received. The ARP reserves the right to make awards in greater or lesser numbers than anticipated. Each program announcement will be available electronically for downloading from the Grants.gov website.

A pre-application is required and must be submitted through the CDMRP e-Receipt website. Effective 2007, full proposals requesting funding from the CDMRP are submitted through the federal government's single-entry portal, Grants.gov, in compliance with Public Law 106-107.
