Department of Defense Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia Research Program Funding Opportunities for Fiscal Year 2005

The Fiscal Year 2005 (FY05) Defense Appropriations Act provides $4.25 million to the Department of Defense Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia Research Program (CMLRP). This program is administered by the US Army Medical Research and Materiel Command through the Office of Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP).

The following FY05 CMLRP Program Announcement for proposals is expected to be released in December 2004:

Therapeutic Development Awards. These awards are intended to fund the preclinical assessment of novel, potential therapeutics for CML. The ultimate goal is to move significantly closer to the development of new therapeutics for CML. These awards may fund individuals or goal-focused, synergistic, multi-institutional consortia. All applicants must include preliminary data relevant to the phase(s) of the preclinical drug development process covered by the proposal. Independent investigators in CML research are eligible to apply. There are no total dollar restrictions, although programmatic priority will be given to smaller-scale, cost-efficient projects with well-defined end-points. Funding can be requested for up to 3 years. The Program Announcement is planned for release in December 2004, with a submission deadline in June 2005.

The following FY05 CMLRP Program Announcement for proposals is expected to be released in March 2005:

Exploration - Hypothesis Development. These awards are intended to support initial exploration of innovative, untested, potentially groundbreaking concepts in CML. Preliminary data is not required, although sound reasoning and a feasibility assessment are integral components. Investigators at all levels are encouraged to apply. The maximum funding amount is $150,000, inclusive of direct and indirect costs, for a performance period of up to 24 months. The Program Announcement is planned for release in mid-March 2005 with a submission deadline in June 2005.

A detailed description of these mechanisms, including evaluation criteria, specific submission requirements, and deadlines will be available in the FY05 CMLRP Program Announcements. The Program Announcements will be available electronically for downloading from the CDMRP web site (https://CDMRP.HEALTH.MIL) upon their release in December 2004 or March 2005 respectively.
