For Immediate Release:

Department of Defense Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia Research Program Funding Opportunities for Fiscal Year 2004

The Fiscal Year 2004 (FY04) Defense Appropriations Act provides $4.25 million for the Department of Defense Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia Research Program (CMLRP). This program is administered by the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command through the Office of Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP).

The FY04 CMLRP Program Announcement for proposals is expected to be released in early to mid-February 2004 and includes the following mechanism:

Therapeutic Development Awards. These awards are intended to fund the preclinical assessment of novel, potential therapeutics for Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML), as well as the development of tools and model systems of CML for preclinical evaluation. The ultimate goal is to significantly move closer to the development of new therapeutics for CML. These awards may fund goal-focused, synergistic, multi-institutional consortia. All applicants must include preliminary data relevant to the phase(s) of the preclinical drug development process covered by the proposal. Independent investigators in CML research are eligible to apply. There are no total dollar restrictions, although prioity will be given to smaller-scale, cost-efficient projects with well-defined end-points. Funding can be requested for up to 3 years. The Program Announcement is planned for release in early to mid-Febuary and the submission deadline is set for July 27, 2004.

A detailed description of this mechanism, including evaluation criteria, specific submission requirements, and deadlines will be available in the FY04 CMLRP Program Announcement. This Program Announcement will be available electronically for downloading from the CDMRP web site upon its release in early to mid-February 2004.
