Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program Funding Opportunities for Fiscal Year 2004
The Fiscal Year 2004 (FY04) Defense Appropriations Act provides $150 million to the Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program (BCRP). This program is administered by the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command through the Office of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP).
The FY04 BCRP Program Announcements for proposals in the following mechanisms are expected to be released in late February 2004 and include, but are not limited to:

New this year:
The Center of Excellence (COE) Pilot Awards are intended to support the development of a well-focused, synergistic, multi-institutional Breast Cancer Center of Excellence Award. This award will culminate in the development of data from a pilot/feasibility study demonstrating the synergistic nature of the proposed Center of Excellence. Recipients of the award will be required to submit a Center of Excellence proposal in the following year, provided BCRP funds are available.
The Collaborative Idea Awards are intended to support collaborative efforts of two or more "Ideas" centered around one main hypothesis. Like the Idea Awards, these awards will not require preliminary data and should be highly innovative.
The Era of Hope Scholar Awards will be modeled after the Innovator Award, but will be offered to breast cancer scientists in the early stages of their careers. Eligible applicants will be independent, non-mentored investigators that are within 0-5 years of post-graduate training including postdoctoral fellowships, clinical training, etc.
This year, for postdoctoral applicants, only Multi-disciplinary Postdoctoral Awards will be offered. These proposals must emphasize a multidisciplinary training program in which at least two disciplines such as: laboratory research, clinical research, social sciences, public health, engineering, mathematics, and/or physics are integrated into a common research and training environment.
Detailed descriptions of each of these mechanisms, evaluation criteria, submission requirements, and deadlines will be available in the FY04 BCRP Program Announcements. Each Program Announcement will be available electronically for downloading from the CDMRP web site upon its release in late February 2004.
