FY02 Breast Cancer Award Announcement

Award negotiations for the fiscal year 2002 (FY02) Department of Defense (DOD) Breast Cancer Research Program (BCRP) have just been completed. The office of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) received $150 million (M) from Congress in FY02 to fund peer reviewed breast cancer research. Of the 3,323 proposals received in response to the FY02 Program Announcements, 454 were recommended for funding.

The goal of the FY02 BCRP is to fund scientifically meritorious research aimed at eradicating breast cancer. As in previous years, the central theme is innovation. Of the fourteen award mechanisms offered, four were new: Biotechnology Clinical Partnership, Exploration, Physician-Scientist Training and Clinical Research Nurse Training Awards. The remaining ten mechanisms have been offered in previous years: Clinical Translational Research (CTR), Collaborative-CTR, Breast Cancer Center of Excellence, Historically Black Colleges and Universities/Minority Institutions (HBCU/MI) Partnership Training, Idea, Undergraduate Summer Training Program, Predoctoral Traineeship, Postdoctoral Traineeship, Innovator and Concept Awards. Negotiations were completed for all awards by September 30, 2003.

Of the 454 FY02 BCRP awards, 412 were made to U.S. institutions, and 42 were made to institutions in 6 foreign countries, including Australia, Canada, Israel, Germany, Sweden and Switzerland. Awards were made to over 160 different institutions. There were 14 award mechanisms offered in FY02, 13 of which were funded. The numbers of awards made in each mechanism are shown in the table below.
