The Fiscal Year 2002 (FY02) Defense Appropriations Act provides $85 million to the Department of Defense Prostate Cancer Research Program (PCRP) to support innovative research directed toward eliminating prostate cancer. This program is administered by the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command through the Office of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP).
The FY02 PCRP Program Announcement was released February 21, 2002, with proposal receipt in May 2002. This announcement will call for proposals in the following mechanisms:
- Postdoctoral Traineeship Awards
- Health Disparity Training - Prostate Scholar Awards
- Health Disparity Research - Prostate Scholar Awards
- New Investigator Awards
- Idea Development Awards
Postdoctoral Traineeship Awards are intended to prepare recent doctoral degree students (3 years or less postdoctoral experience) for careers in Prostate Cancer research.
Health Disparity Training - Prostate Scholar Awards are intended to support training that is specifically focused on the disparate burden of prostate cancer incidence and mortality among African Americans. Individuals at the predoctoral, postdoctoral, or post-residency level are eligible to apply.
Health Disparity Research - Prostate Scholar Awards are intended to support research that is specifically focused on the disparate burden of prostate cancer incidence and mortality among African Americans. Individuals at the Assistant Professor level or equivalent, who have postdoctoral or fellowship training are eligible to apply.
New Investigator Awards are intended to support creative research in prostate cancer and to capture novel ideas in their early stages of development. Preliminary data are not required, but proposals submitted should be based on a sound scientific rationale that is established through logical reasoning and/or a critical review and analysis of the literature. Innovation is a critically important element of this award mechanism. Individuals within 6 years of postdoctoral or fellowship training that have not received major non-mentored funding as Principal Investigator (PI) or co-PI are eligible to apply.
Idea Development Awards are intended to support creative research in prostate cancer and to capture novel ideas in their early stages of development. Preliminary data are required. Innovation is a critically important element of this award mechanism. All investigators at the level of Assistant Professor or equivalent or higher are eligible to apply.
Detailed descriptions of each of these mechanisms, evaluation criteria, and submission requirements can be found in the FY02 PCRP Program Announcement, which can be downloaded from the CDMRP web site (https://cdmrp.army.mil) upon its release. Proposals will be received electronically in FY02. All applicants will be required to submit one electronic version of their proposal as a PDF (Portable Document Format) file.
Please note that the signing of the FY02 appropriation was delayed until January 2002, which required the evaluation and award process to commence before the actual receipt of funding at this Command for these projects. It is believed that funds will be made available for these projects. However, no legal liability on the part of the Government for payment can arise until such funds are made available.
