Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program for Fiscal Year 2001

The Fiscal Year (FY) 2001 Defense Appropriations Act provides $175 million to the Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program (BCRP) to support innovative research directed toward the eradication of breast cancer. This program is administered by the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command through the Office of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP).

Proposals are sought across all aspects of research including all disciplines within the basic, clinical, psychosocial, behavioral, epidemiological, sociocultural, and environmental sciences; nursing; occupational health; alternative therapies; public health and policy; and economics. Additionally, proposals that address the needs of minority, low-income, rural, and other underrepresented and/or medically underserved populations are encouraged.

FOR THE FY01 BCRP, TWO PROGRAM ANNOUNCEMENTS WILL BE RELEASED.

FY01 BCRP Program Announcement I is anticipated to be released in February 2001. The BCRP will continue to offer:

  • Clinical Translational Research (CTR) Awards
  • Collaborative-CTR Awards
Both of these mechanisms require a pre-proposal submission, which is due by March 14, 2001.

New this year: Breast Cancer Center of Excellence Awards
These awards are intended to support the establishment of multi-institutional collaborations among highly accomplished scientists from diverse backgrounds to focus on a major scientific problem in breast cancer. Proposal receipt due date for this mechanism is June 27, 2001.

FY01 BCRP Program Announcement II is anticipated to be released in March 2001, with receipt of proposals due by June 13, 2001. The BCRP will continue to offer the following mechanisms:

  • Idea Awards
  • Clinical Bridge Awards
  • Predoctoral and Postdoctoral Traineeship Awards
  • Career Development Awards
  • Undergraduate Summer Training Program Awards
  • Historically Black Colleges and Universities/Minority Institutions Partnership Training Awards
New this year:
An award will be offered to attract outstanding individuals from diverse fields to explore new avenues in breast cancer research.
