Nita Maihle, Ph.D., Georgia Regents University; Douglas Levine, M.D., Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center
The Ovarian Cancer Academy is pleased to introduce the FY15-FY20 Academy Dean, Dr. Nita Maihle, Associate Cancer Center Director, Professor of Pathology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Georgia Regents University and the Assistant Dean, Dr. Douglas Levine, Head of the Gynecology Research Laboratory, Attending Surgeon and Member of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Dr. Maihle has been a thought leader in our understanding of ligand-independent signaling by the EGF/HER receptor family, including the discovery of EGFR/HER3 isoforms in human reproductive tissues. She also has been responsible for the founding of several cancer research and training programs during her career. Dr. Levine has helped to lead several National Institutes of Health-sponsored TCGA (The Cancer Genome Atlas) programs and conducts his own research on biomarker development, precision medicine, and rare tumors, in addition to caring for patients with ovarian cancer. The diverse background and expertise of this strong team will bring visionary leadership to the Academy. The Academy leadership is committed to providing intensive mentoring, networking, and collaborative opportunities for junior faculty while increasing mentorship of new investigators in the field and integrating consumers into the research process. These activities will aid in the development of the next generation of ovarian cancer researchers who are poised to advance the paradigm in the field of ovarian cancer research.
The Ovarian Cancer Research Program (OCRP) is excited about the vision of the Academy leadership and is dedicated to assisting in moving the field of ovarian cancer research forward. The Deans have outlined a plan to facilitate communication, increase visibility, and develop a curriculum to foster scientific maturation of the Early Career Investigators. They also will implement comprehensive program evaluation to permit continual improvement in the training curriculum and training activities. The OCRP is confident that this new leadership has the passion and expertise to lead the Ovarian Cancer Academy to new heights.
