The problem of alcohol and substance abuse is a growing concern among the general public, military personnel, and veterans. Impacts of this abuse are both personal and societal, and include reduced levels of readiness, mental health problems, increased crime, sexual assaults and suicides. In addition, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and other psychological health problems are strongly linked to alcohol and substance abuse disorders. The Alcohol and Substance Abuse Disorders Program (ASADRP) was established in fiscal year 2010. Since its inception, the program has established a network of research teams with the explicit goal of accelerating the delivery of new or improved treatments, especially related to PTSD and TBI.

The program's approach is to organize multidisciplinary, team-based translational research efforts to expedite the process of identifying promising beneficial compounds by conducting human proof-of-principle clinical trials. If successful, this approach could result in translation of contemporary basic science knowledge into enhanced clinical pharmacological treatment protocols for alcohol and substance abuse disorders especially those related to PTSD and TBI. Through research, these new medication-based therapeutic protocols will make a significate impact on alcohol and substance abuse disorders, improving the health and lives of affected service members, their families, and the American public.

Consistent with our vision to decrease the clinical impact of alcohol and substance abuse, the ASADRP has prepared the above "Alcohol Use Disorder and Comorbid PTSD/TBI Landscape" and "ASADRP Pharmacotherapies for Alcohol and Substance Use Disorders (PASA) Consortium Research Strategy". These documents will help the community understand the problem from a military perspective, provide a research landscape of the current state of the science, and describe the research roadmap of how the PASA Consortium will address these issues. Applicants are strongly encouraged to read and consider the these documents when preparing applications.
