Department of Defense Prostate Cancer Research Program Funding Opportunities for Fiscal Year 2004

The Fiscal Year 2004 (FY04) Defense Appropriations Act provides $ 85 million to the Department of Defense Prostate Cancer Research Program (PCRP) to support innovative research directed toward eliminating prostate cancer. This program is administered by the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command through the Office of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP).

FY04 PCRP Program Announcements for proposals in the following mechanisms are expected to be released late November 2003:

  • Idea Development Awards
  • New Investigator Awards
  • Exploration - Resource Development Awards
  • Exploration - Hypothesis Development Awards
  • Postdoctoral Traineeship Awards
  • Physician Research Training Awards
  • Health Disparity Training - Prostate Scholar Awards
  • Health Disparity Research - Prostate Scholar Awards
  • HBCU Collaborative Partnership Awards

Idea Development Awards are intended to support creative research in prostate cancer and to capture novel ideas in their early stages of development. Inclusion of preliminary data is required. Innovation is a critically important element of this award mechanism. All investigators at the Assistant Professor level (or equivalent) or above are eligible to apply.

New Investigator Awards are intended to support creative research in prostate cancer and to capture novel ideas in their early stages of development. Inclusion of preliminary data is not required, but proposals submitted should be based on a sound scientific rationale that is established through logical reasoning and/or a critical review and analysis of the literature. Innovation is a critically important element of this award mechanism. Individuals within 6 years of postdoctoral or fellowship training who have not received major non-mentored funding as Principal Investigator (PI) or co-PI are eligible to apply.

Exploration - Hypothesis Development Awards are intended to support initial exploration of innovative, untested, potentially groundbreaking concepts in prostate cancer. Inclusion of preliminary data is not required. All levels of experience may apply.

Exploration - Resource Development Awards are intended to support product-driven research aimed at developing critical resources needed to advance the field of prostate cancer research. Resources may include, but are not limited to, development of animal models, cell lines, and reagents. All levels of experience may apply.

Postdoctoral Traineeship Awards are intended to prepare recent doctoral degree students (3 years or less postdoctoral experience) for careers in prostate cancer research. As in previous years, all recent medical and doctoral graduates are eligible to apply for this award.

Physician Research Training Awards are intended to recruit physicians into careers in prostate cancer research. Physicians in the last year of graduate medical education or within 3 years of a faculty appointment are eligible to apply.

Health Disparity Training - Prostate Scholar Awards are intended to support training that is specifically focused on the disparate burden of prostate cancer incidence and mortality among African Americans. Individuals at the predoctoral, postdoctoral, or post-residency level are eligible to apply.

Health Disparity Research - Prostate Scholar Awards are intended to support research that is specifically focused on the disparate burden of prostate cancer incidence and mortality among African Americans. Individuals at the Assistant Professor level or equivalent are eligible to apply.

Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Collaborative Partnership Awards are intended to provide support for infrastructure and training for HBCU faculty with the goal of establishing a sustained prostate cancer research training program at the HBCU. Faculty members working at an HBCU are eligible to apply.

Detailed descriptions of each of these mechanisms, evaluation criteria, and submission requirements and deadlines will be available in the relevant FY04 PCRP Program Announcement. Each Program Announcement can be downloaded from the CDMRP website https://cdmrp.army.mil upon its release.

Two Additional FY04 PCRP Program Announcements for proposals are currently in development and expected to be released in December 2003:

Please note that the FY04 Program Announcements are being released prior to actual receipt of funding at this Command for these projects. No legal liability on the part of the Government for payment can arise until such funds are made available.
