Department of Defense Prostate Cancer Research Program for Fiscal Year 2003

The fiscal year 2003 (FY03) Defense Appropriations Act provides $85 million to the Department of Defense Prostate Cancer Research Program (PCRP) to support innovative research directed toward eliminating prostate cancer. This program is administered by the US Army Medical Research and Materiel Command through the Office of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP).

The PCRP is releasing Program Announcements for nine different funding mechanisms in FY03. The name of each funding mechanism, its Program Announcement release date, and submission deadline are listed in the following table:

New opportunities for prostate cancer research funding this year include:

  1. Exploration-Hypothesis Development Awards are intended to support the initial exploration of innovative, untested, potentially groundbreaking concepts (with no preliminary data) in prostate cancer. Innovation is critical to this award and will be the major evaluation criteria.
  2. Exploration-Resource Development Awards are intended to support product-driven research aimed at developing critical resources needed to advance the field of prostate cancer research. These resources may include, but are not limited to, development of animal models, cell lines, and reagents.
  3. Physician Research Training Awards are intended to prepare physicians for careers in prostate cancer research through a mentored training experience.

The PCRP electronic Program Announcements have been completely revised for FY03. Detailed descriptions of each of these mechanisms, evaluation criteria, and submission requirements can be found in the FY03 PCRP Program Announcement corresponding to that mechanism. Each Program Announcement can be downloaded from the CDMRP web site (https://cdmrp.health.mil). All applicants will be required to submit one electronic version of their proposal as a PDF (portable document format) file.
